Before Your Scan or Blood Test: 10 Things to Know Before Visiting a Diagnostic Centre

A little preparation makes a diagnostic visit easier and reduces the chance of a wasted journey. Here are ten things worth knowing.

Ten things worth knowing

1. Preparation depends on the test. Some investigations require fasting, others require a full bladder, and many require nothing at all. Instructions are issued when your appointment is booked.

2. Bring your doctor’s request form. It tells the team exactly which examination has been requested.

3. Bring identification. Your identity is confirmed more than once before a sample is taken or a scan performed.

4. List your medication. Some medicines affect results. Do not stop taking prescribed medication in order to prepare for a test unless your doctor has told you to.

5. Bring previous scans and reports. Comparison over time often carries more information than a single examination.

6. Tell us if you may be pregnant. This affects which examinations are appropriate, particularly where radiation is involved.

7. Mention implants and devices. Metal implants, pacemakers and previous surgery involving metal matter for MRI safety screening.

8. Allow enough time. Much of an appointment is preparation and positioning rather than scanning. Contrast studies may involve a wait afterwards.

9. Ask what happens next. Ask what the test is looking for, when the report will be ready and how it will reach you.

10. Plan how you will get your result. Reports can be collected in person, sent by email, or delivered via WhatsApp where appropriate. Most results are ready within 24 to 48 hours.
