Prepare for Your Test

What to bring, and what to expect.

Instructions specific to your examination are issued when you book. This page covers the general picture and where preparation requirements come from.

Preparation by category

What preparation generally involves.

For any appointment, bring a valid form of identification, your doctor’s request form if you have one, any previous scans or reports relevant to the examination, and a list of the medication you currently take.

If you are using an HMO or insurance, bring your member number and any authorisation your plan requires. Tell us at booking if you have a condition that affects how you can prepare, for example diabetes, where fasting needs planning.

Some CT examinations require a period of fasting, and some use a contrast agent. Others require no preparation at all. It depends on the study your doctor has requested.

Tell us in advance about allergies, kidney problems, or if you may be pregnant.

Preparation requirements vary according to the test requested. Rapid Diagnostics will provide specific instructions when your appointment is booked.

MRI uses a strong magnetic field that is always on, so safety screening happens before your appointment. Tell us in advance about any implanted metal or electronic device, previous surgery involving metal, or if you may be pregnant.

You will usually be asked to remove metal items and may be given a gown. Scans take longer than CT and the scanner is audible while it works.

Some ultrasound examinations require a full bladder, and others require a period of fasting. Which applies depends on the area being examined.

Some laboratory investigations require fasting; many do not. Where a panel of tests is requested together, preparation is issued for the whole request rather than test by test.

Do not stop taking prescribed medication in order to prepare for a test unless your doctor has told you to. Tell us what you take, and we will advise.

An ECG requires no fasting. Wear a two-piece outfit so electrodes can be placed easily, and avoid applying lotion or oil to the chest area on the day.

For Holter monitoring you will wear a recorder for a set period and return it afterwards. You will be told how to manage the device during that time.

Avoid deodorant, talc or lotion on the day of your appointment, as these can affect the images. Where possible, book for the week after your period, when the breasts are less tender.
