Electrocardiography
ECG
An ECG records the electrical activity of the heart through electrodes placed on the skin. It takes only a few minutes, involves no discomfort, and provides information about rhythm and conduction at the moment of the recording.
Commonly used for
- Investigating palpitations, chest discomfort or breathlessness
- Baseline cardiac assessment within a health screening package
- Monitoring a known cardiac condition
Ambulatory monitoring
Holter monitoring
A Holter monitor records the heart’s electrical activity continuously while you go about your normal day. Because it records over an extended period rather than a few minutes, it can capture intermittent rhythm changes a standard ECG may not coincide with.
Commonly used for
- Symptoms that come and go, where a short recording may be normal
- Assessing rhythm across a full day of ordinary activity
- Monitoring response to treatment over time
